Road safety workshops for elderly drivers

New road safety workshops doing the rounds of Adelaide’s suburbs are preparing elderly drivers for that often painful transition to life without the car.

"Moving Right Along" provides tips for an ever growing segment of the South Australian driving population.

The car means convenience and independence, but age means every driver's licence eventually has a permanent expiry date.
That's why the "moving right along" workshop is being rolled out across the state.

Many drivers simply do not plan for one of the most dramatic changes in their lives - retiring from driving.

"This is something new that we are doing as we recognise the ageing population in South Australia," Julie Holmes from the transport department said.

"They can begin to recognise the warning symbols. Maybe where they're perhaps not driving as much, not feeling as confident. Maybe they've had a near miss."

Drivers pick up tips on how to extend their driving careers but also how to spot those tell-tale signs.

82-year-old Marian Frost attended a Burnside Council workshop and picked up valuable tips about night driving, car pooling, public transport and the need to plan for when she hangs up the car keys.

"One day it's going to happen to all of us. One day you're going to wake up and that will be it. You won't be able to drive again. So get prepared," she said.
