Does South Australia need a new name?

South Australia’s peak business group believes the state needs a new name to completely rebrand it in international eyes.

Business SA chief executive Peter Vaughan says the current name of the state causes a problem internationally.

He told News Limited: "I've been with two Premiers on three overseas trips and whenever we go somewhere that's not familiar with Australia the words South Australia are impossible to understand.

"(It) means to everybody from overseas the whole of the south of Australia. And the initials SA mean South Africa to most other people in the world."

Premier Jay Weatherill has asked the Economic Development Board to decide on a new brand to market South Australia internationally, however coming up with a new name wasn’t part of the brief.

Mr Vaughan believes choosing a new name should be up to a public vote.

Advertising entrepreneur John Singleton has previously suggested renaming the state ‘Bradman’ after Sir Donald Bradman.
