Murdered: Casey Brittle

A mother who was murdered by her violent ex-partner in front of her two-year-old daughter could have been saved 11 times by police.

Casey Brittle, 21, was punched and kicked to death after years of abuse from her former partner, and UK police have been criticised for not intervening in the past.

According to investigations, Brittle called police 11 times to report attacks and threats between September 2008 and August 2010 but was refused help.

The partner, Sanchez Williams, was known to police for his violent past and a long criminal record but but authorities didn't take ‘basic actions’ to help protect Brittle.

Brittle played down the incidents to police and was reluctant to pursue charges because she feared for her safety.

As a result, police never pursued the matter and she was killed late last year.

Amerdeep Somal, a commissioner at the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC)

"In this case it is clear that a number of officers failed to perform to the level expected of them and basic actions, that may have helped others see the full picture of her suffering, were not completed," the commissioner said.

"No consideration was given to why Casey was reporting domestic abuse but then subsequently saying that she did not want police help."

Williams admitted to the killing in March and was sentenced to 15 years in jail, which was later increased to 20 years in an appeal.

The judge said at the time: "We simply cannot guess the long-term damage which will have been caused to that little girl and we can only hope that her future happiness is not irretrievably damaged."

Six officers have been disciplined, and four reprimanded, over the incident.

Last night, Miss Brittle’s mother Victoria Blower said: "Mistakes were made, but there is only one person responsible for my daughter’s death and that is Williams.

"Maybe one small change in the way things were handled could have saved her, or maybe nothing was ever going to prevent him murdering Casey."
