Grisly discovery after man's body washes up on popular NSW beach

A grisly discovery has been made on a popular NSW beach after the body of a man washed up on the shore.

Police were called to North Wollongong beach, south of Sydney, about 6.15am Tuesday after a member of the public reportedly found the body.

The body is yet to be formally identified but police believe it is a 28-year-old Illawarra man.

The death is not being treated as suspicious and police suspect the man drowned when he went swimming after midnight following drinks with friends.

His belongings were found on the beach earlier today.

The ABC reports locals were distressed by the tragedy.

“It’s just a bit sad,” Carol Housen said.

“It’s a nice beach and you don’t expect anything like this to happen.”

A report is being prepared for the coroner.
