Mandurah is an ideal holiday destination for Chinese tourists, according to Metrix Consulting managing director Marquis Pohla.
Mr Pohla told Mandurah’s business community at a breakfast on Wednesday Chinese travellers were different to a lot of other travellers the Peel region was accustomed to.
He said with China’s booming economy and the number of Chinese travellers to WA increasing significantly, the spotlight would be on holiday destinations close to Perth.
‘‘Chinese people don’t like to travel far, which is a positive for the Peel region,’’ he said.
Mr Pohla said it was a perfect opportunity for Mandurah to try and attract Chinese tourists who were not prepared to travel further south to Margaret River or Albany.
He said Chinese travellers put a lot of emphasise on high-quality accommodation and food and entertainment was also an important aspect for them when holidaying.
City of Mandurah communications and marketing manager Jane Pole-Bell said one of the key strategic objectives of its tourism campaign was to position Mandurah as a ‘‘must see’’ destination.
‘‘We need to inspire the community to become ambassadors for Mandurah,’’ she said.
‘‘We need to shift people’s perceptions and raise people’s awareness of Mandurah and the Peel region.’’
Ms Pole-Bell said the city was focussed on creating a digital presence in the community through the re-launch of its Mandurah Visitor Centre website and employing social media.
A recipe cook-off competition showcasing culinary experiences is underway and will feature celebrity chefs and judges. The competition runs until September before an action-packed month in October, highlighted by the Mandurah Boat Show.
