Surfer injured in shark attack at popular NSW beach

A surfer has been taken to hospital after he was injured in a shark attack at a beach on the NSW coast.

The 31-year-old man swam to shore after he was bitten on the right foot while surfing at Birubi Beach, near Port Stephens, at about 9.30am on Saturday.

NSW Ambulance told Yahoo7 he was treated by lifeguards and an off duty nurse on the scene.

He has since been taken to John Hunter Hospital, where he is in a stable condition but will require ongoing medical treatment overnight.

Birubi Beach will be closed until further notice.
