'Stay indoors': Emergency declared as truck carrying hydrochloric acid explodes south of Brisbane

Residents around Loganholme, south of Brisbane, have been told by police to remain indoors after a truck carrying hydrochloric acid exploded on the M1 motorway on Friday morning.

Police were advised at about 8.40am on Friday that a truck carrying a volatile substance was on fire on the Pacific Motorway in the southbound lanes near the Logan Hyperdome.

Queensland Police have now declared an emergency situation.

Coogee chemicals has released a statement confirming that its truck contained 15,000 litres of hydrochloric acid and that their driver was checked for smoke inhalation but has been released.

"Coogee Chemicals' incident response team is on site and is working with emergency services to resolve the issue."

They say the truck fire has now been put out, but police are continuing to advise residents to remain indoors with fumes from the fire filling the immediate area.

The southbound lanes of the M1 are currently closed, while the northbound lanes have been reopened.

The emergency declaration also covers a one kilometre radius of the crash site.

Authorities are asking people in the immediate area to stay indoors.
