Inside: Rare footage of life in North Korea

Rare video has emerged of life in North Korea’s capital city.

Finnish journalist Mika Mäkeläinen shot the footage on April 18 as he was travelling in a minibus from downtown Pyongyang toward the airport.

The journalist was in the country to cover the Day of the Sun celebrations marking the 105th anniversary of the birth of Jim Il Sung, North Korea’s founder.

He told CNBC he shot it openly through the windshield.

“Nobody told me not to film,” he said.

The streets appear to be wide with few people driving or seen walking on the footpath but this could be due to the rain.

Some are seen walking out from what could be a subway or underground tunnel.

Tall buildings appear on the horizon with large, Soviet style concrete square apartment buildings.

The footage then cuts to a more barren road in what looks like the mountains.

Someone is seen running across the road with an umbrella towards shelter at the railway crossing.

The video has more than 135,000 views since it was uploaded to Facebook on Thursday.
