Victim of acid attack vows to return to Zanzibar

A British volunteer who suffered horrific burns after an acid attack in Zanzibar has vowed to return to the country to resume volunteer work and aid in the capture of her attacker.

Eighteen-year-olds Kirstie Trup and Katie Gee were traveling together in Zanzibar in August when acid was hurled at them by two men on mopeds as they walked home from a restaurant.

Both girls were left with extensive burns on their face, body and hands.

"This experience, as horrible as it has been, has not deterred me from wanting to do more voluntary work in Zanzibar, " Trup told the UK's The Daily Mail.

"In fact I would even like to return to do more work there next year," she said.

"I am very determined to overcome my injuries and aid the investigation as much as possible."

Zanzibar authorities reportedly have a possible suspect fitting the women's description of their attacker, a man they say was 'very dark with a shaved head and wearing a white t-shirt and dark jeans'.

The men on the mopeds reportedly smiled at the girls before throwing the acid.

Zanzibar's commissioner of police, Mussa Ali Mussa, did not rule out the victim's cooperation in the investigation.

"It will depend on the circumstances of the investigation (but) yes, we shall ask them.

"We shall contact the UK authorities," he said.

In an interview with UK publication Sunday Times, Trup said she still had many unanswered questions.

"It doesn't make sense that our attackers haven't been caught. Stone Town is a small place and everyone knows everyone."

Trup is still being treated as an outpatient of the UK hospital where she was initially trated

Gee reportedly remains in hospital with more serious injuries.
