A Sydney police officer has been charged after he allegedly left his young daughter in a hot car for nearly an hour.

The 35-year-old man went into a south-west Sydney bar, believed to be the Bankstown Sports Club, just before midday yesterday.

Police said the man had the intention of returning a few minutes later.

But passersby found the man's four-year-old daughter hanging onto a partially-opened window about 45 minutes later.

The car was parked in the full sun near Mcdonald Lane at Bankstown.

Members of the public alerted the club's security, and the young girl was removed from the vehicle

She was cared for until police arrived.

Her father has been charged with leaving a child in a motor vehicle and causing emotional distress.

He's been granted conditional bail to face Bankstown Court next month.

His duty status is under review.
