Heavily armed police have swarmed on the Brisbane suburb of Upper Mount Gravatt after a man was shot in the mouth.

The victim had reportedly gone to the shooter's house, to confront him.

They engaged in a heated discussion on Norton street before one of the men allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot him in the mouth at close range.

The alleged offender then went back into the house with a woman and her baby.

It is not known what the two men, both aged in their 20s, were arguing about prior to the shooting.

The victim has been taken to hospital in a stable condition.

The man was later coaxed outside by police officers using surrender tactics.
