Is this historical painting proof of time travel?

If you look very closely at this mural from 1937 you might be able to spot proof that time travel could be possible, according to some internet sleuths at least.

The painting, which depicts a scene from the 17th century, appears to show a man holding something he should not have got his hands on for a couple of hundred more years.

The image titled, Mr. Pynchon and the Settling of Springfield, shows the founder of the present-day town of Springfield, Massachusetts surrounded by native Americans.

William Pynchon, a well-known English colonist, is pictured in the centre of the painting by Umberto Romano.

However, it’s the man directly to the right of Pynchon that’s causing a stir.

The native American man appears to be sitting in a bath tub while staring directly at a ‘smartphone’ he is cradling in his right hand.

Upon closer inspection the man even appears to be using his thumb to scroll down the ‘screen’ of the mystery object.

Since appearing online in the past few days several theories have been floated.

However, one Reddit user mused a possible solution to the baffling mural.

“It does look like that but it appears he is in a tub so it probably is just a bar of soap.”

Smartphones did not become widespread until quite recently, almost 400 years after the event in this mural.

With all of the hype and excitement surrounding the iPhone 8, it’s easy to forget that Apple will introduce not one, but three brand new iPhone models later this year.

One could also conclude that the image surfacing so closely to the Apple’s latest release could be yet another genius marketing campaign.

If all goes according to plan, Apple will launch its highly anticipated iPhone 8 alongside an iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus sometime in late September.
