Inside the squalid house of horror that saw two parents jailed

A couple in the UK have been jailed after reportedly admitting child neglect, after children were found living in squalor in a house where there was "rotting food and faecal matter on the floor".

According to online reports the home in Tyneside was "uninhabitable", infested with flies and one police officer said the odour "made his eyes water" when he entered the property.

Chronicle Live reports the father had said that they had lived in this condition for six months, while the mother had claimed that she "did a bit of tidying up this morning" when asked about the house.

Both parents have been jailed for two years.

Judge Stephen Earl told the pair: “Frankly, how they managed to survive in your care is somewhat in question.

“It is appalling that you lived in this situation, never mind brought up children in it."

According to reports, the first officer to arrive took the children in protective custody straight away.

Prosecutor Daniel Penman told the court: “He also inspected the kitchen and found it to be full of rotting food. There was faeces on the floor and soiled men’s underwear.

“In the living room, again, there was rotting food and faecal matter on the floor.”

It is reported that the couple had employment which involved them having health and safety and hygiene certificates at work, but had been warned over the condition of their home in the past.

Defence barristers urged the judge to suspend the sentences, telling the court that the parents had been struggling with their own issues at the time.

The judge reportedly queried how the children had not been brought to the attention of authorities earlier, with reported serious head lice for more than two years.

The parents, who cannot be named for legal reasons, admitted chid neglect and have been jailed for two years each.
