Man who killed two mothers driving at 127km/h could face deportation

A former refugee has been jailed for six years and faces deportation back to Lebanon upon release after being convicted of killing two mothers in a horror crash.

Mohammad Hassan and his family came to Australia as refugees but on Thursday they watched as he was put behind bars for killing mothers Bozica Nikolick and Souba Domitch in Melbourne in 2016.

Hassan hit the two women while speeding through a red light at 127km/h in Attwood.

Judge Lisa Hannan noted Hassan wasn’t drinking, using drugs or drag racing.

He was speeding, the judge said.

“You failed to observe an amber and then red light over a significant distance, which, had you been observant would have been sufficient for you to brake and avoid collision,” Judge Hannan said.

Judge Hannan told the victim’s families before announcing the sentence it “could never reflect the value of life”.

“My task is to sentence criminality, not to engage in an impossible task,” she said.

Hassan was sentenced to eight years and eight months jail, with six years and eight months before he’s eligible for parole.

He’ll likely be deported to Lebanon on release.
