Lifeguards charged after boy, nine, drowns at public pool

Two lifeguards have been arrested and charged after a boy’s body was pulled from a public pool in Israel.

Police on Saturday arrested the two lifeguards, aged 38 and 59, residents of the southern city of Beersheba, on the suspicion of negligent manslaughter, Times of Israel reports.

Medics said the nine-year-old boy was found not breathing and without a pulse.

For 45 minutes they tried to resuscitate the boy, later identified as Yaakov Ben-Simon, before pronouncing him dead.

Yaakov’s relatives told Israel’s Channel 2 the boy was a good swimmer and they do not know what happened at the pool.

A manager of the pool told Haaretz the lifeguards were not at the pool at the time Yaakov drowned although they were listed as being on duty.

The two guards are due to face a court on Sunday.
