'Daylight robbery': Outrage over Uber surge pricing during Melbourne commuter chaos

Uber has been slammed by frustrated Melbourne commuters after charging more than $50 to get to the other side of the city during a train outage.

During peak hour on Thursday, a "computer fault" grounded all suburban train lines for more than two hours and many already on board were trapped between platforms until services resumed.

Metro Trains told travellers to "seek alternate tranposrt" during the outage and many turned to ride-sharing service Uber to try and get to other train stations.

"Shame on you UBER! 3.7x surcharge when the entire Melbourne train network is down! SHAME" one Twitter user wrote.

"Uber_Australia Any chance of dropping surge pricing when the entire Melbourne train network is down?" another asked.

Some said the service were charging more than $50 for a seven kilometre trip and other Glen Waverley residents said they saw prices as high as $180 to get home.

"I thought you were running some 'taxi' service not daylight robbery. $50 for 5km because trains cancelled in Melbourne metro," one person tweeted.

Metro trains announced on Twitter that most services were resumed just before 6pm following a two-hour suspension.

But a "trespasser" caused further delays for the Glen Waverley and Alamein lines.
