Mystery woman has 'significant' information on unsolved murder

A woman has come forward with information about the unsolved murder of WA man Joshua Warneke after police offered $250,000 for information leading to an arrest.

Police are in Broome investigating the murder of the 21-year-old man in 2010.

They told Seven News on Monday they urgently needed a woman who called Crime Stoppers with new information to call again.

She called police after they launched a fresh investigation yesterday and offered a $250,000 reward to anyone with information about his murder.

"The information is going to assist, but how far I can't tell you," Detective Inspector Peter Branchi said.

The mystery woman called Crime Stoppers three weeks ago but did not leave a name.

Police believe her information was credible but are not saying anything more.

Information started rolling in to Crime Stoppers yesterday almost immediately after the reward was announced.

People have also been visiting a police mobile unit set up in Broome, while flyers are also expected to go out to residents later this week.

Warneke was found dead on the side of the Old Broome Road in the early hours of January 26, 2010, after leaving a nightclub to walk home.

The original police investigation was botched, with an Aboriginal man, Gene Gibson, wrongly jailed for the murder.

As well as the reward, there is also an offer of immunity from prosecution to anyone who can provide information about Josh's killer.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
