Salt Creek attacker sentenced to more than 17 years in prison

Roman Heinze, the man who abducted and attacked two European tourists on a remote South Australian beach will spend at least 17 years behind bars.

A court in South Australia has sentenced Heinze to a head sentence of 22 years and four months, with a 17 year non-parole period back dated to his arrest.

The 61-year-old was previously found guilty of six charges including indecent assault, aggravated kidnapping and endangering life in relation to the incidents at the remote beach on the SA Coorong in February last year.

In the Supreme Court on Wednesday, Justice Trish Kelly handed down a the sentence for the attacks on the two women from Brazil and Germany and for some previous offences.

Heinze was found guilty in an 11 day trial over the shocking crimes in South Australia's remote south east last year.

While a jury found him not guilty of attempted murder, he was convicted on kidnapping and assault charges

Heinze's victims, two young women from Brazil and Germany, were travelling with him last February when he attacked.

One of them was tied up, sexually assaulted and punched in the face.

The other was attacked with a hammer and mowed down by the man in his four-wheel drive.

He was later found not guilty of raping a Tasmanian he met on a website.
