Magnitude 5.7 earthquake strikes off Vanuatu's coast

An earthquake measuring 5.7 in magnitude has struck northwest of Vanuatu, in the South Pacific the United States Geological Survey (USGS) says.

The quake epicentre was 122 kilometres west-northwest of Sola, at a depth of 20.4km, the USGS reports.

Initial reports measured the quake, which hit at the eastern margin of the Australia plate, at 6.0 magnitude but the USGS later downgraded the measure.

The quake was more than 550km northwest of Vanuatu's capital Port Vila.

There was no immediate tsunami warning or any reports of damage or casualties.
