'Lightweights' tackle would-be car thief and make citizens' arrest

Two men have turned the tables on a large thief who stole their car in Victoria.

The duo gave chase in Dandenong, risking their own lives before making a dramatic citizens' arrest.

When the would-be thief went for a walk around the town a vehicle at the front of one mechanics caught his eye.

But little did he know – he was about to get more than he bargained for.

That's when Jake Aarts and owner Jayde Young gave chase, with Mr Young ending up on the bonnet.

"I run after him, jumped in the window, grabbed the keys and then yeah he wasn't going anywhere after that," Mr Aarts told 7 News.

Mr Young added the thief "actually got dragged from the front of the shop, 50 metres up he was hanging out the window".

As they pulled the robber out of the car, he had a change of heart.

"He was just bribing us, he was very apologetic at first obviously trying to let us let him go, that he was sorry and that sort of stuff," Mr Young said.

"But then when he realised we were calling police he obviously didn't want to be caught."

The duo was forced to pin him to the ground and despite being "lightweight" compared to the assailant, they "still took him on" and "gave him a couple of hits every time he tried to get away".

The pair had to hold the thief down in the gutter for 15 minutes.

While waiting for the police the man told them he was working for a bikie gang, and as they emptied his pockets they allegedly found a bag full of gold jewellery.

The 30-year-old Frankston man was charged with 24 offences.
