The body of a 65-year-old man overdue from a tramp near the Jackson Bay area of Westland has been recovered.

The man went on a day trip in the Smoothwater River area on Thursday morning and police were notified at midday on Friday that he had not returned, says Sergeant Paul Watson.

Police and search and rescue staff found the man's body on Saturday morning and it has been recovered.

There are no suspicious circumstances and the matter has been referred to the coroner.
