Hit-and-run accused left cyclist to lay in street with ‘broken body’

A young woman has confessed to running down a cyclist, allegedly leaving the father of two for dead in the street.

Disqualified driver Rebekah Stewart will face a judge in March after pleading guilty to the hit and run that left Christian Ashby with critical injuries.

Ms Stewart has never revealed what caused her to crash into the father-of-two or why she allegedly left him injured on a Ballarat road.

The 24-year-old maintained her silence outside Ballarat Magistrates Court where she had pleaded guilty to charges stemming from the crash.

The charges included dangerous driving causing serious injury, failing to stop at the scene of a crash, driving while disqualified and driving an unregistered vehicle.

CCTV video released by the court showed Ms Stewart allegedly driving the damaged car after the crash on Good Friday 2016, through Delacombe, Victoria.

It's alleged Ms Stewart hid it in a car yard.

It's claimed she told a friend the damage to the vehicle was caused when she hit a kangaroo.

Meanwhile Mr Ashby was lucky to survive.

The cyclist was riding near Lake Wendouree about 6am when he was allegedly struck by the Silver Mitsubishi Lancer.

Those who saw him lying on the road severely injured rushed give him assistance before calling an ambulance.

Mr Ashby suffered horrific injuries in the crash and has since had eleven operations to rebuild his broken body.

Ms Stewart was tracked down by police and arrested six days after the crash at a house in Altona.

She will return to court in March before being sentenced later this year.
