Mass murderer Charles Manson's bad prison behaviour revealed

As US mass murderer Charles Manson remains "seriously ill" in hospital, prison officials have spoken out about his decades of bad behaviour, which includes more than 100 violations.

State corrections officials have confirmed the 82-year-old has been involved in a number of prison indiscretions including hiding cellphones and a hacksaw, threatening staff and assault.

It's alleged Manson also spat in guards’ faces, threw hot coffee at a prison staffer, started fights, tried to cause a flood, possessed drugs and set his mattress ablaze in the time served since he was jailed in 1971.

“Suffice it to say that he cannot be described as a model prisoner,” Terry Thornton, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, said.

This week the 82-year-old was transferred from Corcoran State Prison in Kings County, California, to a hospital 100 kilometres away in Bakersfield for undisclosed medical condition.

Manson has been in prison for more than four decades for his 1969 killings, which included the brutal murder of director Roman Polanski's actress wife, Sharon Tate, who was heavily pregnant.

He was sentenced to death in 1969 along with four of his "Manson Family" disciples for having led the killing of seven people, but their sentences were later changed to life in prison.
