The search for a boy who went missing while swimming off Sydney's Maroubra Beach has been suspended following reports a body had been located.

The search was suspended after 7.15am Friday when police were called to the southern end of Maroubra Beach where the body was found, police said.

The body has yet to be formally identified and police attached to the Eastern Beaches Local Area Command are preparing a report for the coroner.

A search aided by helicopters and jetskis was launched to locate 14-year-old Tui Gallaher who disappeared Tuesday after he and his cousin got into trouble while swimming at that beach around 8.30pm on Tuesday.

Earlier, Tui's mother spoke of her heartache after finding out her son was missing.

"You don't know you can run out of tears until something like this happens," Sandra Tamano told reporters on Thursday.

The teen's cousin was pulled from the surf by a passerby shortly before Tui vanished.

Police say the man who rescued the cousin then tried to look for Tui but could not find him.
