Authorities doubtful Gold Coast overdoses caused by ‘flakka’

Gold Coast police do not believe that the mystery drug that left a Victorian footballer in a coma was the notorious substance known as ‘flakka’.

Riki Stephens, 27, who was found at the Islander Hotel on Saturday morning, is now in an induced coma.

Experts believe the drug that caused a mass overdose on the Gold Coast last week was more than likely to be a bad batch of MDMA and not the zombie drug dubbed the ‘scariest drug in America’.

Another man was taken to hospital overnight after being found in a car at Mermaid Beach. Although paramedics do not believe it is linked to last weekend’s mass overdose.

A police operation is trying to find out where it came from and who sold it, while they await toxicology reports.
