Family dog trapped in stormwater pipe for five hours

A family's dog has had an amazing escape after being trapped inside a narrow stormwater pipe near Richmond in Sydney's north west.

A delicate and desperate operation freed Blizzard the 12-month-old Swiss Shepherd from the 100 metre-long pipe.

She had been running around her owner's property with her brother Bear yesterday afternoon.

"They [the two dogs] are avid explorers and they are very curious dogs," said Rob Buchanan, Blizzard's owner.

When Rob and his partner Sam could not find the dogs, they followed their footprints to the drain.

They called emergency services and crews got to work, who identified the half-way point of the pipe, smashed it open and dropped a camera inside.

After a worrying five hours, Blizzard was finally free.

Bear also got stuck after following Blizzard in, but he is six months younger and was small enough to find his own way out. Both dogs were unharmed.
