Police arrest man 'locked in cupboard' in siege in Melbourne's southeast
Police have detained a man who locked himself in a cupboard during a siege in Melbourne's south east on Sunday.
Heavily armed police ended the dramatic siege that lasted an hour.
Shoppers were evacuated from the area as police used capsicum spray to overpower the armed man.
The man threatened people near the Dandenong Markets, about 1pm while wielding a knife in his left hand.
The man then locked himself in a fire hydrant cupboard before Special Operations Group (SOG) police forced the doors open and sprayed the man with capsicum spray.
Officers forced the door open with a rope tied around the door handle.
But the man then tried to pull the door shut with one hand while he covered his burning eyes with the other.
He was pulled from his hiding place about 1.55pm, tackled to the ground by several officers and arrested.
The 31-year-old suffers from mental illness.
At the time of the incident a relative had been taking the man to hospital for psychiatric issues when he jumped out of the vehicle.
Following the incident he was taken to the Alfred Hospital in a stable condition.
He will not face any charges.
