One witness told ABC News she was walking her dog when other people started yelling at her to get out of the area.

"At first I thought he was telling me off for having my dog off the lead," Zoe Ottaway said.

"But when he yelled again and pointed to the water I saw a croc. It wasn't too close to us, but close enough to visibly see that it was big.

“We then ran up the beach. The croc was [lurking] and bobbing in the water."

Another witness told the ABC she had watched the large crocodile stalking a kayaker.

The crocodile is still believed to be at large and locals are being urged to stay away from the area until it is caught.

Senior wildlife ranger and veteran crocodile catcher Tommy Nichols told the ABC there had been several reports of sightings and that he had personally seen the crocodile.

However, rangers were unable to catch it yesterday.

He said there were plans to return to the area overnight to try to locate and catch the animal.

Mr Nichols said it would be taken to a crocodile farm after it had been secured.
