What you need to know about the Facebook hoax doing the rounds again

Facebook has released a statement ensuring users a viral status update is nothing but a hoax as rumours reignite that the social media platform will no longer be free to use.

"Facebook is free and it always will be" is the message that the social network has had to post once again to quieten the minds of the worriers.

The response comes as a flood of identical Facebook status updates asserting the users they own copyright to their data.

One version reads: "Facebook is now a public entity. All members must post a note like this. If you prefer, you can copy and paste this version. If you do not publish a statement at least once it will be tactically allowing the use of your photos, as well as the information contained in the profile status updates."

Similar hoaxes have been around from as early as 2009.
