Carnarvon drug traffickers jailed

A man and woman from Carnarvon have been jailed for four and three years respectively for offering to supply a prohibited drug to an undercover officer in 2013.

Dam Ta Lam, 39, and Lisa Tran, 29, were sentenced yesterday after being found guilty by a Perth District Court jury.

Judge Ron Birmingham said Lam and Tran had pleaded not guilty to offering the officer 30.5 grams of methamphetamine during an operation by Carnarvon detectives to target drug dealers.

In addition, Lam had pleaded guilty on the first morning of the trial to the $1000 sale of one gram of the drug to the officer on the same day.

The offences were committed at adjoining plantations in Carnarvon in which the pair were involved in market gardening.

Judge Birmingham said the Lam and Tran were active members of the Vietnamese community in Carnarvon, particularly Tran, who assisted in translations with those who were affected by cyclones and helping them get government assistance.

She also assisted Lam when he was having financial difficulties with his business, and a relationship developed between them which led to him separating from his wife.

Both Lam and Tran were made eligible for parole.

They were declared to be drug traffickers.
