Police find Spiderman toy in Spedding's van

It has been revealed that a Spiderman toy was found in Bill Spedding's work van as police investigated the disappearance of toddler William Tyrrell.

Police seized the figurine from Mr Spedding's Volkswagen as they searched for evidence into the suspected abduction of the three-year-old.

Mr Spedding allegedly travelled around with the Spiderman figurine on the same day as little William disappeared.

The 63-year-old white goods repairman remains the only named person of interest but has repeatedly denied any involvement in the boy's disappearance.

William was taken from his grandmother's Kendall house on September 14, wearing a Spiderman costume as he and his sister played hide-and-seek.

Police detectives later questioned Mr Spedding's wife, Margaret, as to why her husband had the Spiderman figurine.

Last night, she reportedly claim her husband used the figurine "to keep him company" when he travelled around performing jobs in the Port Macquarie area.

She said one of the children the couple had cared for had got it when he was four.

"The child left it in the van for (Mr Spedding) to keep him company when he was driving," the Daily Telegraph reported Mrs Spedding saying.

Bail refused over child sex offences
In April, Mr Spedding was denied bail after he was charged with child sex offences.

His lawyer Robert Hoyles said Spedding denied the offences.

"One might say Mr Spedding will deny these allegations until his final breath," he said.

The tradesman was charged, accused of sexually assaulting two girls, aged three and six, in April 1987.

The court heard Spedding denied the claims when police initially put them to him in the 1980s.
