New play centres for hospital

The often unsettling and boring wait at the emergency department for Goldfields children is now less so, with the installation new activity centres.

The colourful games have been built into the walls of waiting rooms in the Kalgoorlie Hospital to keep children entertained and distracted.

Raising money during the past year, local women from the Inner Wheel club of Kalgoorlie-Boulder presented the hospital with a $3000 cheque to cover the costs of one of the activity centres.

WACHS Goldfields regional director Geraldine Ennis said the games were the perfect addition to the waiting rooms.

"It is really quite difficult to get toys for children's waiting rooms because you always have to worry about the infection control risk and also things going out the door as well," she said.

"These are attached to the wall, they can be wiped down and kept clean and are quite bright and interactive.

"We put them up about a week ago and every time I have passed by there has always been kids at them."

Puzzles and other small games and activities are included on each of the centres, which are also located in the Allied Health waiting room, the outpatients' waiting room and the children's ward.

Inner Wheel Kalgoorlie-Boulder also provides pamper packs for local cancer patients undergoing treatment at the hospital.

More than 60 packs have been received by patients in the past 18 months, providing men and women with various helpful toiletries and products worth up to $180.
