School boy who almost drowns goes unnoticed by classmates

A US teen has ended up in a medically induced coma after he nearly drowned during a pool class at his school.

7 Eyewitness News reported the 13-year-old was in the pool at Waterfront School, Buffalo with his class who were testing out boats made of recycled materials.

In a video filmed by a woman who was poolside, the boy, Larryn Watkins, can be seen coming up for air before being unresponsive as other kids continue to use their boats in the water.

A short time passes before officials start shouting for kids to get out of the water so they can rescue Larryn.
Fortunately the officials are able to revive the young boy.

The woman who shot the video, Julienne Kuty, was watching her grandson in the pool when it all took place.

"I heard a woman yell, ‘Is he okay? Is he okay?’And then she walked away," she said.

"Then I saw a lifeguard jump in and pull the boy out of the pool".

Ms Kuty’s daughter-in-law, a nurse, gave Larryn CPR until he regained consciousness.

It’s believed he was under the water for 57 seconds.

School officials sent out a press release about the incident saying Larryn was “soon able to stand and talk.”

But Ms Kuty said she saw school officials force the teen to stand as he was complaining about feeling unwell.

She said Larryn was given a bucket and told to sit down, he was later taken to hospital.

The school board said the incident would be reviewed using security footage.

There are calls for the school pool to be closed.
