Utility warns of dangers in restricted fishing areas

The Water Corporation has warned people against fishing in restricted areas around the Kununurra Diversion Dam Bridge, where fast-flowing water can be a safety risk.

North West regional manager Rino Trolio said entering the restricted areas was dangerous and could lead to serious injury or even death.

"People are not permitted on the banks of the Ord River or on the Ord River itself, even in boats, within the restricted zone because of the risk posed by the fast-flowing water," he said.

"Signs and marker buoys clearly mark the restricted areas, which include the entire Kununurra Diversion Dam wall, as well as sections of river extending 100m upstream and 200m downstream of the dam.

"We have installed a fence to keep people out of the restricted zone on the banks of the Ord River because of the risk posed by water discharged from the open dam gates."

Mr Trolio said people who chose to jump the fence and stand or fish on the banks of the river could easily be swept into the turbulent water.

"We do not want any member of the community, whether they are fishing or simply sightseeing, to put themselves at risk," he said.

People found inside the restricted zone will be referred to the police by the Water Corporation and offenders could be charged with trespassing.

Potentially deadly saltwater crocodiles are also frequently seen in the fast-flowing water near the dam gates and could pose a risk to people fishing on the rocks.
