Would you quit your job if your manager told you this?

A young woman in the US is being praised for quitting her job after her manager told her that she should not have helped a person in need.

Arizona resident Savannah Baker quit her job at Subway after being reprimanded for helping a hungry homeless man.

"I used to work at Subway a couple months ago, but I quit," she wrote on the official Subway Facebook page.

"What made me quit was one time a homeless man came in to get a sandwich."

Her Facebook post, which received close to 600,000 likes, when it was posted several years ago, is making waves online again. Many people have praised the young woman for taking a stand and for refusing to work for a company where she got told off for doing what was right.

Ms Baker’s post continued: "He asked if the sandwich would be more than $10. One of my coworkers told him no and he carried on."

She says when the man realised he didn't have his money on him when he got to the end of the counter and went to leave.

However Ms Baker decided to stop him and she paid for the man’s meal on her own credit card.

"He thanked me over and over," she wrote on Facebook.

"Then when the next person in line got to the register she told me how nice of thing I did."

However instead of being applauded by her coworkers, she got yelled at by her manager, who said that if someone could not pay for their food, staff should tell them to leave.

"I told her that I wasn't going to let him starve. It was 115 degrees (46 degrees Celsius) - he was probably exhausted, dehydrated and very hungry."

Ms Baker was baffled by the fact that she got into trouble for helping someone in need and decided to quit her job a week after the incident.

"I was being constantly told by owners and supervisors of the company that this was a business about people and making people happy."

"But I guess the homeless aren't people."

The re-emergence of her story shows the respect people have for those who show kindness to others and stand up for those in need.
