Firefighters worked frantically to stop a fire reaching a high school in Warwick last night.

Crews were called to Warwick Open Space, near the corner Beach Road and Erindale Road, just after 5.30pm.

Warwick Senior High School is nestled within Warwick Open Space and surrounded by bushland.

Erindale Road was partially closed while about 20 firefighters battled the blaze and eventually brought it under control by 8pm.

Their temporary base was the Warwick SHS staff car park.

A Department of Fire and Emergency spokesman said no property damage had been reported but crews would remain at the scene until midnight to monitor hot spots.

The fire burned through about 15 hectares and appeared to have one point of ignition.

The cause was unknown.
