Hans happy to lose locks for cause

Hillman Cricket Club president John Carr starts to shave off the rest of member Hans Fitz's hair.

Hillman Cricket Club member Hans Fitz almost shed a tear when he said goodbye to his ponytail of almost 30 years last week.

The loyal club member was dared by the club's sponsors to shave his head as part of the club's Pink Stumps Day fund-raiser for the McGrath Foundation.

Mr Fitz said he could not say no to a dare when there was money on the table for a charity.

"It (ponytail) was there a long time, it's been trimmed over the years, but it's always been there," he said.

"But what's done is done; it was for a good cause."

The club raised more than $1000 on the day and an extra $650 from Mr Fitz's head shave.

President John Carr, who had a smile on his face when he took the clippers to Mr Fitz's hair, said he was pleased with the spirit of the club and its fundraising efforts.

"I think if people from every sort of club did the same thing, we would be raising a lot of money," he said.

Club secretary Allison Jack said the club had four major fundraising events a year for charity.

"It is about giving back to the community," she said.

Mrs Jack said the club had also donated $1000 to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and an extra $3000 to the McGrath Foundation from hosting club events.

"It's great, and it's through the dedication of the community and the families at the club that we can do this," she said.
