One dead in Wheatbelt rollover

One person is believed to have been killed in a car rollover near the small Wheatbelt town of Darkan this morning.

Paramedics were called to the intersection of Coalfields Road and the Williams-Darkan Road just after 5.40am.

They arrived within 15 minutes to find the car on its roof.

It is understood the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Wheatbelt had the worst road toll of any WA region last year with 49 people killed or seriously injured.

Last week, a 10-year-old boy died near Goomalling when the car his family was travelling in slammed into a tree.

WA Police have expressed despair at the number of deaths on country roads, and in the Wheatbelt in particular.

They launched a blitz on drivers in the Wheatbelt at the weekend to try to cut the road toll.

Police say one in every 51 drivers was engaging in risky behaviour.

More than 110 local and Perth-based officers flooded 13 towns as part of Operation Aginar in an unprecedented "lockdown" of WA's most dangerous roads.

Police checked 3108 vehicles in the Friday night operation and 20 of those drivers tested positive to drugs or alcohol.

A further 37 were charged with speeding offences and three drivers were issued with infringements because of seatbelt offences.
