Footy team puts upgrades on agenda

Service facilitator Brian Keally and president Olga Van Burgel are looking forward to some upgrades at the Harvey Senior Citizens Centre with last week’s Royalties for Region funding announcement.

HARVEY Senior Citizens and Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault Football Club were among 32 South West organisations to receive a financial boost when the South West Development Commission opened its community chest.

Harvey seniors were allocated $9897 for centre upgrades from a total of $370,000 Royalties for Regions funding.

Service facilitator Brian Keally, who submitted the application, said the money was earmarked to replace the carpet in the foyer and hall and rejuvenate the existing parquet floor.

He said the planned upgrades aimed to make the centre more attractive for clients and as a facility for hire.

The centre will contribute some money and labour towards the facelift which was planned to be completed within the next few months.

Club president Olga Van Burgel said the financial windfall was fantastic news.

"The hall is very well used by members and also residents who hire it for functions," she said.

"We do not receive regular funding and could not pay for upgrades without grants."

Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault Football Club president Jennifer Cope said it was wonderful to receive a grant of $10,184 towards a cool room compressor and replacing evaporator units.

"Our 40-year-old cool room failed completely after it had been repaired a few times and it was not viable to repair it again," she said.

"We have been without a cool room since last November and have to make do with buckets of ice.

"The grant is very much appreciated as the cool room is not only used by our members but also by other sporting groups and by the wider community when the clubrooms are hired out for functions."

Ms Cope said the overall replacement cost was $16,000 and the club would contribute the shortfall of $6000.
