Appeal for help to find stolen bikes

Police have issued a fresh plea for information to try to track down more than a dozen stolen bicycles valued at close to $40,000.

Between August 28 and September 14 thieves targeted several bike shops in Cockburn Central, Success, Rockingham, Myaree and Port Kennedy.

The offenders stole about 18 mountain bikes ranging in price from $1300 to $7000 from those businesses they managed to break into.

Two men have been charged with the burglaries and will face court in the coming weeks.

Lakes Bikes in Cockburn was targeted twice by the group within days.

Two bikes valued at about $1500 each were stolen, along with two customer bikes that were being serviced. Store manager Joe Morriss said the burglaries had been hard on staff.

"We're a small business, we have loyal clients that come into the store . . . it really gets staff down," Mr Morriss said.

"Insurance covers the thefts but it's more than that - we work hard and then we have people do this to us."

Det-Sen. Const. Andrew Kenworthy from Rockingham detectives said it was important for the public to be wary if they were offered high-valued mountain bikes at a heavily reduced price.

"If you believe you've been offered a deal that sounded far-fetched we're asking you to come and speak with us," he said.
