P plate driver, 18, dies in crash in Tasmania's north

A P plate driver has died near Launceston, in Tasmania's north, in the state's third fatal car crash this year.

Police say the 18-year-old lost control of his ute as it rounded a sweeping left-hand bend on the road between Lilydale and Rocherlea just before 5:00pm (ADST) Friday afternoon.

The car went into the lane for oncoming traffic and collided with two cars.

The teenager was pronounced dead at the scene shortly afterward.

Three people from the other cars were taken to the Launceston General Hospital with minor injuries.

The road was closed until about 9:30pm Friday night.

Police want to speak to anyone who saw the black ute just before the crash.

They also want to speak to a man who was driving a small truck and who spoke to police at an intersection with Pipers River Road not long after the crash.
