Australia v India: Boxing Day Test day one: as it happened

Australia finished an intriguing day one of the Boxing Day Test on 5 for 259, with Steve Smith (72 not out) and Brad Haddin (23 not out) at the crease.

Australia leads the Test series 2-0 after convincing wins in Adelaide and Brisbane but lost star opener David Warner before a run was scored after winning the toss and opting to bat.

Chris Rogers (57) and Shane Watson (52) stopped the bleeding there, leading Australia to 1 for 92 at lunch, but they fell in quick succession after the break.

Shaun Marsh and Steve Smith then went about steadying the innings with some circumspect batting and survived until tea, with Australia 3 for 174.

Debutant Joe Burns looked comfortable at the crease but fell for 13 off the bowling of Yadav to leave Australia on 5 for 216.

Smith and Haddin were able to guide Australia through to stumps, however, and leave the contest evenly poised.
