Terror plot accused, Omarjan Azari, will not get fair trial, court told

A man accused of planning a terrorist attack on Australian soil will struggle to get a fair trial because of "inaccurate media reports", a court has heard.

Omarjan Azari, 22, was arrested in September when hundreds of state and federal police officers carried out raids in Sydney.

He faces a charge of conspiring to prepare for a terrorist attack in Australia.

Media reports at the time suggested it was a plot to carry out a campaign of random beheadings of members of the public in Sydney and Brisbane.

Azari's barrister, Steven Boland, told Central Local Court that his client "will come to trial by jury in extraordinary circumstances" because of publicity surrounding the case.

Mr Boland also took issue with references to beheadings in media reports.

Outside court, Azari's solicitor Ben Archbold said, "There's been no mention of beheadings at all, categoric."

Azari is also accused of making $15,000 available for the travel of Australians to the Middle East to fight with the terrorist group Islamic State.

Another man arrested on Monday, Ali Al-Talebi from Beecroft, faces similar funding charges.

Azari postponed a planned bail application until the new year.
