Man arrested over 'planning' of 2004 Mawson Club heist

A man has appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court today charged over an aggravated robbery in the Canberra suburb of Mawson 10 years ago.

David Allen Will, 59, from Jerrabomberra, on the border of the ACT and New South Wales, has been charged with aiding and abetting the 2004 hit on an armoured security van which had been collecting weekend takings from The Mawson Club.

Police took years to solve the crime, in which two men, one armed with a revolver and the other with a sawn-off shotgun, held up the two security guards as they returned to their parked van with three satchels of cash.

One man shot a guard, who was injured with pellet wounds to his chest, stomach, arm, hand and eye.

Two men have already been jailed over the incident which netted more than $150,000.

Last year Mark Anthony Munro was found guilty of aggravated robbery and intentionally causing grievous bodily harm when he shot a guard during the heist at the Mawson Club.

He was sentenced to 15 years in jail for the offence.

His accomplice was sentenced to nine years' jail for the crime.

Police allege Will used inside information from a third party to plan the robbery and the two men currently in prison were then engaged to carry out the crime.

Will asked the court for time to find a lawyer.

The case is expected to be back in court in January.
