Picture posted by BASE jumper prior to death

This is the last haunting image uploaded to Instagram by British BASE jumper Gareth Jones who later died falling 90m off Sydney’s North Head.

The picture shows Mr Jones, 25, with his legs dangling over the edge of the cliff which later claimed his life posted with the caption ‘Another day another happy place’, News Corp reports.


Police said experienced BASE jumper climbed over a safety fence to watch the sunrise with four friends early on Sunday morning but then slipped near the edge and fell.

He reportedly met his friends about 5.30am and the group went to the Fairfax Walk lookout point.

It is believed two of Mr Jones' friends climbed down the cliff, using ropes and ladders to reach him on the rocks, but he could not be revived, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

Police are treating the death as a ‘tragic accident’ and will prepare a report for the coroner.

A National Parks and Wildlife Service spokeswoman said the service was not aware of BASE jumping at North Head, in Manly, but is now investigating.

The thrillseeker, from Brighton on England's south coast, had completed more than 500, and had been photographed flying through the air at many locations around the world, reports the SMH.

Mr Jones, who had been living in Australia for the past year and regularly posted videos and photos of people BASE jumping at North Head.

His death is not believed to have been involved in a base jump.

Tributes have been pouring in on social media and one friend said "Please be safe in everything you do my friends. Life is dangerous! Fly free brother G. it shouldn't end this way."
