Police find mother of abandoned baby

Police appeal after newborn baby found down drain

Police have found the mother of a newborn baby who was abandoned down a drain in Sydney's west this morning.

She has been identified as a 30-year-old woman from Quakers Hill.

Around 7.30am on Sunday, cyclists riding along a bike track beside the M7 heard a baby crying from underneath a drain.

A group of passersby worked together to lift the top off the drain – which is about 2.5 metres deep – and saw a baby lying at the bottom.

Police from Quakers Hill Local Area Command attended a short time later and removed the child from the drain.

Authorities made a public appeal for information to help find the baby's mother.

Police say she was found after extensive inquiries involving hospital record checks and doorknocks.

The woman has been taken to Blacktown Police Station and is assisting police with their inquiries.

The baby boy remains in a serious but stable condition at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
