Diesel thefts threaten SW highway work

Thieves are repeatedly stealing diesel from heavy vehicles involved in upgrades to Bussell Highway north of Margaret River.

Contractors Fulton Hogan have lost more than $5000 in fuel in the past eight weeks, with thieves striking at least five times, according to site engineer Chris Joy.

“The police can’t do anything until they’ve got evidence — I want the community to be aware there are thieves around,” he said.

Mr Joy hopes anyone with information will contact the police.

He said the theft meant the heavy vehicles had to make extra trips to Margaret River to refuel and this had set back the road-widening program.

About 650 litres of diesel are believed to have been stolen.

Margaret River Police Sergeant Brett Cassidy said the onus was on the contractors to reduce the risk of fuel thefts.

The work vehicles were parked off-road in bushland and police said they could not patrol that area all the time.

“We’ve given them some crime-prevention advice regarding not leaving fuel in the tanks and other measures,” he said.

“People go there because they leave fuel in (their vehicles).”

Sgt Cassidy said diesel could be removed from trucks overnight, and security measures, including greater site monitoring, could help catch the trespassers.

Those caught or proven to have taken the fuel would face stealing charges, Sgt Cassidy said.

Main Roads WA spokesman Dean Roberts said the cost from stolen fuel was ultimately passed on to the public.

“Any assistance that the public can give by reporting any suspicious behaviour that they observe would be appreciated,” he said.

Mr Joy said there was also some minor vandalism at the depot during the past month.

Residents with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
