Bail denied for man accused of providing funds to Syrian fighter

A Melbourne man accused of providing funds to an unknown person to enable them to fight in Syria has been been denied bail.

Hassan El Sabsabi of Seabrook was arrested last month during counter terrorism raids across Melbourne.

He is facing seven charges of providing funds to an individual who has an association with a terrorist organisation.

The court was told 23-year-old El Sabsabi had shown sympathy for extremist views.

Several members of his family were in court, including an uncle, who promised to keep El Sabsabi away from radical views and to provide him with an income and work.

The court heard El Sabsabi had travelled overseas several times, including to visit family in Lebanon, and that he expressed a desire to travel to Syria.

Magistrate Lance Martin said El Sabsabi posed an unacceptable flight risk and could reoffend.
