Manji to get free wi-fi

Manjimup will be brought into line with Perth next month when free wi-fi is introduced in the CBD as part of a revitalisation project.

Wi-fi will be made available in Giblett Street, Brockman Street and Coronation Park towards the end of November.

The launch coincides with the beginning of the Brockman Street revitalisation, a project which involves updating shop fronts and replacing shop awnings.

“This component of the SuperTowns Project will see Brockman Street become the town’s culinary and food precinct, creating another drawcard for both locals and visitors to stay longer and enjoy what we have to offer, ” Manjimup shire president Wade DeCampo said.

Manjimup will be one of the first councils in the South West to introduce blanket wi-fi in its town centre.

Blankewi-fi means users can move within the Wi-fi zone without having to rely on hotspots.

“It is certainly timely for the shire to be taking the initiative of providing free wi-fi,” Cr DeCampo said.

“It is a driver of economic activity and improves the visitor experience of Manjimup.”

Manjimup Visitors Centre manager Roy Piggott said the availability of wi-fi in town was a daily request from visitors.

“It is definitely something visitors will use and benefit from,” he said.

“It’ll be a great addition – we are apparently in the 21st century.”

Mr Piggott said the introduction of Wi-Fi would not take traffic out of the visitors centre.

“Local businesses and tourists will see signage go up to advertise the free wi-fi zone and should look forward to being able to access emails, social media and other resources such as maps and tourist information from the centre of town,” Cr DeCampo said.

“Having the wi-fi available in Coronation Park provides integration between Brockman Street and the Manjin Park precinct, which opens up the town centre even more.”
