Three fundraisers for WA shark victim

More than $5000 has been raised so far to help rehabilitate 23-year-old surfer Sean Pollard after a shark tore off both his hands and part of an arm during an attack off Western Australia's south coast.

The Bunbury footballer remains at Royal Perth Hospital after he was attacked near Wylie Bay at Kelpids Beach, about six kilometres east of Esperance, on Thursday morning.

Natalie Banks, founder of the No WA Shark Cull campaign, has launched an Indiegogo fundraiser for Mr Pollard, although she does not know him.

Almost $5500 has been raised so far and the funds will be given to the family after October 14.

The Esperance community has also started fundraising to help with Mr Pollard's recovery, with collection tins at the Shire's administration and leisure centres.

The Lions Club will arrange for the money to be given to Mr Pollard after October 17.

Meanwhile, the Pollard family have also set-up the Sean Pollard Appeal on Facebook.

The state's Fisheries Department immediately responded to the attack by catching and killing two white sharks on drumlines - one was 3.46 metres long and the other was 2.68m long.

It was the first time white sharks - a protected species - had been killed by WA officials.

The department's principal shark scientist Rory McAuley said an examination of Mr Pollard's surfboard indicated a white shark was responsible.

But it could not determined if either of the caught sharks were responsible because sharks often disgorged stomach contents.
